Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to StyleMonky

Shopping secondhand is a little different from shopping at a traditional clothing store.

Every piece has its own history, sizing can vary, condition isn't always “perfect,” and sometimes we don't even know exactly where a garment's journey began.

That's part of the fun.

We've put together answers to some of the questions we hear most often. If you can't find what you're looking for, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

Where does StyleMonky get its clothing?

We source clothing from a variety of places, including Hollywood estate collections, Hollywood vintage collections, auctions and entertainment-industry wardrobe liquidation channels.

The majority of our inventory comes from film and television wardrobe departments and related liquidation channels, which is one of the things that makes StyleMonky different from a typical secondhand clothing store.

We also acquire genuine vintage clothing, designer pieces, shoes, accessories and plenty of unexpected treasures.

In other words, we never quite know what we're going to find next.

Is the clothing actually from movie and television wardrobe departments?

Most of it is  - roughly 80%

We acquire garments through legitimate resale and liquidation channels associated with entertainment-industry wardrobe departments. Some pieces may have wardrobe department, studio, production or other identifying tags.

However, a wardrobe or studio tag does not automatically mean that a particular garment was worn by an actor or appeared on screen.

When we have reliable information about an item's history or source, we'll tell you in the product description.

When we don't know, we won't make up a story.

Did an actor wear the clothing?

We don't make that claim unless we have documentation to support it.

Some garments have interesting wardrobe markings, production tags or other clues about their history. Those can tell us something about where a garment was handled or catalogued, but they don't necessarily establish that it appeared on screen or was worn by a particular person.

If an item's history can be verified, we'll share what we know.

Otherwise, you'll get the facts—not Hollywood mythology.

Sometimes the mystery is half the fun.

Is StyleMonky affiliated with Sony, WB, NBC, or other entertainment studios?

No.

StyleMonky is an independent fashion resale business and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Sony, NBC, or any other film studio, television network, production company, designer, actor or brand mentioned on our website.

When a studio, network, production or brand name appears in a product listing, it is used to accurately describe the garment, its labeling, or its documented source.

What does “secondhand” mean at StyleMonky?

Secondhand simply means that an item has had a previous owner or life before reaching us.

Some pieces may have been worn. Others may have spent their entire previous life hanging in a wardrobe department, retail environment, closet or storage facility.

We inspect every item before listing it and describe its condition as accurately as possible.

Do you sell vintage clothing?

Yes—and vintage is one of our favorite categories.

We have pieces dating back decades, including clothing from the 1970s, 1980s and beyond.

Vintage sizing and construction can be very different from modern clothing, so we recommend paying close attention to the measurements provided in each listing rather than relying solely on the size printed on the tag.

Why doesn't the size on a vintage garment match modern sizing?

Because clothing sizes have changed dramatically over the decades.

A vintage “size 10” may fit very differently from a modern size 10.

That's why measurements are often more important than the size on the label.

Whenever possible, we provide measurements in the product listing. If you're unsure about the fit of something you're interested in, contact us before purchasing and we'll do our best to help.

Are all StyleMonky items used?

Yes and No.

Our inventory can include:

 - Pre-owned clothing

 - Vintage clothing

 - Designer pieces

 - New or unworn items

 - Sample garments

 - Wardrobe department pieces

 - Shoes and accessories

 - Deadstock and older unused inventory

Because our inventory comes from so many different sources, condition varies from item to item.

The individual product description is always the best source for the condition of a particular piece.

Will my item have signs of wear?

It might.

That's the nature of secondhand and vintage fashion.

We inspect our items and make a reasonable effort to identify significant flaws, stains, damage, alterations or other notable signs of wear in the listing.

Small imperfections consistent with age or previous use may exist, particularly with vintage garments.

Please read the complete description and look carefully at all photographs before purchasing.

If something is important to you and you're not sure about it, ask us. We'd rather answer a question before your purchase than disappoint you afterward.

Do you clean the clothing before selling it?

The Motion Picture industry has one of the highest standards in professionally cleaning their wardrobe and maintaining them in the best conditions possible.

As you can imagine some items might have been cleaned and been sitting on racks for 20 -30 years so some light discoloration or dust can be expected.

We inspect and prepare items appropriately before listing them.

However, cleaning requirements vary considerably depending on the fabric, age, construction and condition of each garment.

Some vintage and delicate pieces should not be aggressively cleaned because doing so can damage the garment.

When an item has specific cleaning or care considerations, we'll note them in the listing.

Are designer items authentic?

We make every effort to accurately represent the brands and designers of the items we sell.

For higher-value designer pieces, we may use available labels, construction details, provenance and other information to evaluate authenticity.

We will never knowingly sell counterfeit merchandise.

When an item cannot be confidently represented as authentic, we won't represent it as such.

Why are some items one-of-a-kind?

Because they really are.

Unlike a traditional clothing retailer, we generally don't have a warehouse full of identical dresses in six sizes.

We buy collections, wardrobe lots, vintage pieces and individual finds.

That means you may find something you absolutely love—and there may only be one of them.

If you see something you love, don't assume it'll still be there tomorrow.

How often do you add new items?

Constantly.

We're continually acquiring, sorting, photographing and listing new inventory.

Because much of our inventory comes from collections and liquidation opportunities, our selection changes frequently.

The best way to discover new pieces is to check back often and follow StyleMonky on social media.

Why are StyleMonky prices sometimes so low?

That's one of the advantages of buying secondhand.

We don't operate like a traditional retail store, and we're able to acquire inventory through sources that can provide exceptional value.

Our goal is to pass that value along.

You might find a beautiful designer piece, vintage treasure or exceptional dress for a fraction of its original retail price.

We like finding the bargain almost as much as you do.

Can I request a specific type of clothing?

Absolutely.

If you're looking for something specific—vintage dresses, designer shoes, evening gowns, men's clothing, a particular size or something completely unusual—let us know.

We're constantly sourcing new inventory, so your request might help us know what to look for at our next acquisition.

How do I know if something will fit?

The safest approach is to compare the measurements in our listing with a garment you already own that fits you well.

Don't rely solely on the size printed on the label, particularly with vintage clothing.

If measurements aren't provided or you need additional measurements, contact us before purchasing and we'll do our best to provide them.

Do you accept returns?

Please see our Refund & Return Policy for the complete details regarding returns, refunds and eligible items.

Because we sell primarily one-of-a-kind and secondhand merchandise, our return policy is necessarily different from that of a conventional retailer.

Please read the individual product description carefully before purchasing.

How quickly do you ship?

We ship daily Monday trough Friday our cutoff time is 10AM for that day.

We make every effort to process orders as quickly as possible.

Most orders are carefully inspected, packed and shipped after purchase. You'll receive tracking information once your order has shipped.

Because we're dealing with a large and constantly changing inventory, processing times can occasionally vary.

Our goal is simple:

Get your StyleMonky treasure into your hands as quickly and safely as we can.

What if I have a question about an item before I buy it?

Ask us!

Seriously.

If you're wondering about measurements, fabric, condition, color, construction, markings, tags or anything else that isn't clear from the listing, contact us before purchasing.

With secondhand clothing, a 30-second question can save a lot of disappointment.

Why does some clothing have unusual tags or markings?

You may occasionally find garments with:

  • Wardrobe department tags

  • Studio or production markings

  • Inventory numbers

  • Costume department labels

  • Designer labels

  • Alteration markings

  • Previous owner's names or initials

These markings are part of the history of the garment.

We photograph and describe relevant markings when they help identify or understand an item.

But remember: a tag can tell you something about a garment's history without necessarily telling you the entire story.

Is StyleMonky just another thrift store?

Not exactly.

We love thrift stores. We shop them ourselves.

But StyleMonky was created around something a little different: finding interesting clothing from unusual sources and giving those pieces another life.

One day that might mean a genuine 1970s vintage dress.

The next day it might be a designer gown from an entertainment wardrobe liquidation.

And sometimes it might be a perfectly ordinary shirt that simply deserves another chance.

That's StyleMonky.

Why buy secondhand fashion?

Because good clothing deserves more than one life.

Buying secondhand keeps usable clothing in circulation, reduces waste and gives you the opportunity to find pieces that aren't sitting on the rack at every other store.

And there's another benefit:

You get to wear something that isn't exactly like what everyone else is wearing.

Vintage. Designer. Unusual. Beautiful. Weird.

We like all of it.

What makes StyleMonky different?

We're building StyleMonky around three things:

Great Finds

We spend a ridiculous amount of time finding interesting clothing.

Great Value

Our goal is to offer beautiful clothing at prices that make sense.

A Little Bit of History

Some of our pieces come with stories, labels, markings and histories that you simply won't find in a conventional clothing store.

We're not trying to be the biggest fashion retailer on the internet.

We're trying to make finding something amazing unexpectedly easy.

Still have questions?

We're real people behind this operation—not a giant customer-service department hidden somewhere behind a wall of automated responses.

If you have a question about an item, your order, sizing, shipping or anything else, get in touch with us.

We'll do our best to help.

And if you're looking for something specific, tell us. We might already have it buried somewhere in the pile.

Welcome to StyleMonky.

You never quite know what you're going to find. 🐒
